Measuring 28 feet tall, 18 feet wide and 62 feet in length, The Palazzo's float will use an assortment of materials including golden flax, white sesame seed, peach lentil, red millet, safflower, dehydrated carrot and red bell pepper with accents of sweet rice and eucalyptus leaves.

The gondola, made of black seaweed and red carnations, overlaid in gold strawflower petals, will float in floral water created with blue iris accented with white roses and orchids. More than 30, roses will be featured through the gardens and floral displays. The Palazzo's float will serve as the stage for the opening ceremonies and will be the first float to start down the five-and-a-half mile Parade route.

The opening ceremonies also feature an appearance from the Tournament of Roses Grand Marshal, which this year is celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, who operates the Delmonico Steakhouse at The Venetian and is getting ready to open his newest restaurant, Table 10, at The Palazzo.

In Kaiser Permanente's second annual participation in the Rose Parade, the float reminds all of us at Kaiser Permanente — members, physicians and employees — that good health is not created solely in a doctor's office, but also through living a thriving life and allowing our imaginations to blossom.

This year's parade theme is "Our Good Nature. An estimated one million spectators will watch the parade in Pasadena each year, and an estimated 40 million more worldwide historically watch it on television. Designed by Raul Rodriguez and built by Fiesta Parade Floats, the float will feature 50, roses, along with peony, delphinium, larkspur, tulips, lilies, hydrangeas, lilacs, and other plant-based materials.

For example, five cast members are confronting childhood obesity and diabetes, both of which are growing epidemics nationwide. Those with diabetes carry insulin pens, pumps, and injections, enabling them to enable them to manage their diabetes while they manage to enjoy teen activities like cheerleading, soccer, and drama club, too.

Two cast members successfully confronted the lifestyle factors that put them at risk for obesity, and along the way, helped their parents and siblings learn to savor salads and veggie stir-fry, along with the relaxation that regular exercise delivers.

Kaiser Permanente member Alexus Williams, 15, was diagnosed with diabetes as an infant, and underwent a leg amputation before her first birthday. With the help of a prosthetic leg and the lifelong care of her Kaiser Permanente pediatric endocrinologist, today Alexus participates in JROTC and drill team.

The remaining six teens in the cast, with their individual accomplishments in cheerleading, dance, basketball, gymnastics, and long-distance running, are the thriving sons and daughters of Kaiser Permanente physicians and employees.

The S. Catch of the Day fishing boat, is a salute to the major commercial fishing and cannery operations that employed tens of thousands of people at the Port during the first half of the 20th century. The local fishing fleet still operates today and brings in millions of pounds of squid, shrimp, shark, swordfish, lobster, rock cod, halibut, sardines and slime eel on an annual basis.
