As you gain Trophies, they translate into experience points that raise an RPG-style "Level" that goes on your new gamer profile, illustrated above. As you can see, the sample player shown above has earned a total of 45 trophies, giving him a level of 5.

Number of trophies don't linearly scale to your level, of course, since gold and silver trophies are worth more. So if you want to examine a player's actual trophy collection, you can do that by browsing to a different part of his profile. If you want to get into a virtual urination contest with another player, you can directly compare the size of his trophy collection to yours -- you can do it by listing every game you've both played, or actually go in and compare individual trophy acquisitions.

As you can see from this shot, much like Achievements, trophy goals can also be secret until you find them. And that's pretty much the long and the short of it.
